Mission
DANCE STUDIO MISSION
The Dance Program strives to offer dance students the opportunity to develop their skills both in school and in professional venues. Through study in the Dance Program, students will develop their talents in classical ballet, contemporary and modern dance. Students will graduate prepared for the rigors of a Liberal Arts or Conservatory college program. Students work with professional choreographers each year to hone their skills and learn their craft.

Curriculum
Elementary Dance Techniques
The entry-level course of dance study at Brooklyn Arts. The dance program is a 4-year sequential study grounded in the study of classical ballet and the dance technique of Lester Horton. Through sustained, sequential study and analysis, students will gain performance skills and conceptual understanding of the codified technique of Lester Horton and classical ballet technique. They will achieve a strong foundation in these techniques that will begin to develop healthy bodies and good physical habits. Throughout the course, students will learn anatomy and injury prevention. They will participate in a daily dance warm-up, learn about the skeletal, muscular and their response to dance movements, and study the nutritional elements and their effects on short-and long-term physical performance.
Intermediate Dance Techniques
The 2nd level of dance study at Brooklyn Arts. Beginning Dance Techniques is a prerequisite for this course. The dance program is a 4- year sequential study grounded in the study of classical ballet and the dance technique of Lester Horton. Through sustained, sequential study and analysis, students will gain performance skills and conceptual understanding of the codified technique of Lester Horton and classical ballet technique. They will build upon the strong foundational skills learned in the previous course. Students will begin to explore and apply concepts and skills to various genres of dance choreography. They will participate in a daily dance warm-up, learn about the skeletal, muscular and their response to dance movements, and explore application of technical skills to multiple styles of dance.
Components of this class include:
- Ballet II Technique
- Horton II Technique
- History of American modern dance and classical ballet
Advanced Dance Techniques
The most advanced level of dance study at Brooklyn Arts. The dance program is a 4- year sequential study grounded in the study of classical ballet and the dance technique of Lester Horton and an introduction to the dance technique of Martha Graham. Components of this class include:
- Ballet II Technique
- Horton II Technique
- Preparation for dance college auditions
- Resume building
Through sustained, sequential study and analysis, students will gain performance skills and conceptual understanding of the codified technique of Lester Horton, classical ballet and the dance technique of Martha Graham. They will continue to build upon the strong foundational skills learned in the previous courses. Students will explore careers in dance. They will participate in a daily dance warm-up, learn about the skeletal, muscular and their response to dance movements, and explore application of technical skills to multiple styles of dance.

StaffFrank Proudfoot, AP Ms. Kildare, Instructor Ms. Lee, Instructor Staff Bios: Ms. Lee: Michelle Lee is a graduate of the NYC public school system and feels honored to be able to give back by taking her experience full circle and teaching at Brooklyn High School of the Arts. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School where she earned a BFA in dance performance and is a graduate of Touro College where she earned a Master’s degree in School Building and District Leadership. In 2000, she had the honor to perform at the Kennedy Center in front of President Clinton as a United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts. She has guest taught dance at University of Lima and University of Arizona and has performed professionally with various dance companies in NYC including Earl Mosley's Diversity of Dance, and Obeidiah Wright's Balance Dance Theatre. She also performed with the North American tour and NYC productions of Stomp. Her choreographic work has been presented at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Joyce Soho Theater, Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, The Clark Studio Theater, the Juilliard School and other venues in NYC and Pennsylvania. Ms. Kildaire: Brittney Kildare is proud to be a member of the Brooklyn Arts Dance Department, where has enjoyed her time working with the dance students in their dance training and education, and with the theatre students on their production of Bring It On! She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Dance Performance from Oakland University in 2009 and her Master of Arts, K-12 Dance Education from New York University in 2017. Brittney's professional dance credits include, Detroit Pistons Dance Team ""Automotion"", Deeply Rooted Dance Theater (DRDT), Robert Morris University Dance Guild Director and Dance Team Coach and member of the Chicago girl group Femè. |
