VOCAL STUDIO MISSION
The Vocal Department at Brooklyn High School of the Arts is dedicated to the highest performance standards in music. Students pursue a rigorous program of solo and ensemble singing. Students will graduate prepared for a Liberal Arts or Conservatory College program. Students have the opportunity to work closely with top professional vocalists in the New York scene through our various partnerships. Since its inception, the department at Brooklyn Arts has performed high-quality (NYSSMA Level 6) and challenging music. Our students perform in two in-house concerts every year, as well as in numerous venues ( Barclays Center, MSG, etc.) around the city throughout the year.

Curriculum
Concert Choir
The concert choir is an environment where vocal students can thrive and develop as individuals and as a community. Students learn group vocal technique, music literacy, basic music theory, sight reading, solfegé, singing in harmony and basic keyboard skills. A variety of genres are studied including classical, contemporary, spirituals, folk, and popular. Throughout the year students will learn to sing in several different languages such as English, Latin, and Ghanaian. The Freshman Choir performs at the Winter and Spring concerts.
Creative Artistry
Student led and highly improvisational, students collaborate to create and arrange original works to be performed throughout the school year. Students learn group vocal technique, music literacy, advanced music theory, sight reading, solfegé, singing in harmony and keyboard skills.
Advanced Treble Choir
The prerequisite for this course is the completion of Freshman Choir or by audition. The course is open to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior girls. The Women’s Choir studies and performs NYSSMA level 4, 5, or 6 pieces. The repertoire is comprised of music in 3 and 4-part harmony in a variety of languages. The choir performs at the Winter and Spring concerts as well as outreach performances such as at the Kings Theater. Members of the Women’s Choir are also eligible to perform in the Brooklyn College Opera Choir.
Mixed Choir
The prerequisite for this course is the completion of Freshman Choir or by audition. The course is open to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students. The Choir studies and performs NYSSMA level 4, 5, or 6 pieces. The repertoire is comprised of music in 3 and 4-part harmony in a variety of languages. The choir performs at the Winter and Spring concerts.
Select Choir
The prerequisite for this course is the completion of Freshman Choir or by audition. The course is open to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students. The Select Choir studies and performs NYSSMA level 5 or 6 pieces and participates in the NYSSMA competition. The repertoire is comprised of music in 4 to 15-part harmony in a variety of languages and genres. The Select Choir performs almost every month at venues such as the Barclay center, Hunter College, Brooklyn College, Jan Hus, as well as community outreach. Members of the Select Choir are also eligible to perform in the Brooklyn College Opera Choir.
Music Theory and Advanced Music Theory
Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. ... Music theory is concerned with describing how musicians and composers make music, including tuning systems and composition methods among other topics.

StaffMs. Jung, Instructor Ms Allocco, Instructor Staff Bios: Kristy Jung: Kristy Jung is one of Brooklyn Arts vocal teachers, teaching various levels of choir, music theory, and musical theater. Having served over 15 years as an educator, the New York native has dedicated the majority of her life as a performer and music educator in New York City. After graduating as a performer from Fiorello LaGuardia High School, Kristy went on to receive her bachelor’s and master’s degree in both Music Education and Music Performance from Aaron Copland School of Music. Throughout her 10+ years as an educator in the NYC public school system, Kristy has held the position of choir director, music director and musical theater director with MTI, and was the head of the music department at Edward Bleeker JHS. In addition to her life in front of the classroom, Kristy also works in various capacities with Carnegie Hall, was the Music Coordinator and Liaison to Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Connect Program (SRC), and currently serves on the Board of Advisory for “Circle World Arts”. Kristy joined BHSA’s music department in 2018 and is excited to foster community and excellence to our vocal students. |
